From head to toe, this male mannequin was constructed to express the ideal measures of the human body, based on Albrecht Dürer’s (1471-1528) studies of proportion. Although the ball-and-socket joints add some extra length, this movable mannequin represents an ideal of beauty – the image of a perfect man in a miniature version. His head is decorated with a laurel wreath. The detailed and costly workmanship indicates that the work was not intended for an artist’s studio. Instead, the figure was an exquisite collector’s item of superior quality.
