These two gentlewomen were found in a tomb dating from the 8th century. This period was the heyday of tomb sculpture in China, because in the mind of the Chinese, the spirit of the deceased lived on. Therefore, the tomb was equipped to ensure an adequate stay in the after life. The rotund shape of the ladies in waiting is representative of the beauty ideal of that time. Their make-up is fashionable, their coiffures are exquisite and the tips of their shoes point upward. The number of female tomb figures attest to the high social rank of the deceased woman during the rule of the Tang Dynasty in Ancient China.
