Yuan Yao (active 1712-1755) Qing-Dynasty, Qianlong Era, 1742ChinaInk and colour painting on silk 212 x 99,3 cm

This hanging scroll depicts a bizarre mountain landscape with lodgings, travellers traveling in carts and sedan chairs, riding on animals or on foot. The detailed scene shows the everyday concerns of travellers, and is in stark contrast to the seemingly imaginary landscape: the lodgings on the right are exclusive, while those on the left are much simpler and equipped with a separate dining hall. Yuan Yao was the court painter of the Chinese Emperors Yongzheng (1723-1734) and Qianlong (1736-1795). This scroll demonstrates his technical excellence with a skilled combination of decorative and fantastic elements, as well as realistic elements.
