Robert-Joseph Auguste (Meister 1757, † 1805)1770/72ParissilverØ 36,3 cm; Ø base 50 cm

This tureen made of solid silver is one of the most beautiful creations of the French goldsmith Robert-Joseph Auguste. This representative piece of table silver conforms to a "pot-à-oille", a ragout pot, which had been designed especially for the favourite dish of the French King Louis XIV (1638-1715). The handles in the shape of realistically rendered rams’ head, the ornaments consisting of acanthus foliage, pearls and laurel leaves, as well as lush oak garlands, are drawn from the ancient examples and thus mark a turn towards the Classicist style. Placed at the centre of a festive table, the tureen was an impressive and precious decorative centerpiece.
