Robert Leon Demachy was a photographer, painter and writer. Like his compatriot Anne Brigman and the Brüder Hofmeister from Germany, he belonged to the international art movement Pictorialism. Demachy was particularly interested in the so-called positive printing methods. He experimented with complicated photographic techniques, including gum bichromate or carbon printing, as well as photogravure. These printing methods achieved a result that was comparable in character to that of a painting or a graphic print. In tune with the zeitgeist, Demachy sought inspiration within nature. The flowing transitions from man to nature are a typical element of his work.
