In 1898/99, the Belgian designer and architect Henry van de Velde created a number of posters, advertisements and labels for the entrepreneur Eberhard von Bodenhausen (1868-1918) from Mühlheim. Von Bodenhausen invented a protein concentrate to be mass marketed as a nutritional supplement. Van de Velde’s designs for von Bodenhausen’s company, Tropon, are early examples of corporate identity in the modern sense. He succeeded in combining curved ornamental lines with sober typography to create a design that does not fulfil today’s requirements of consistency, but is nonetheless recognisable.
