Above all Hermes, the patron-god of all heralds, is associated with the so-called kerykeion. Heralds played an important role when it came to political, military, legal, and religious issues. The staff was an insignia of their role. The number of preserved bronze caducei is small. The caduceus at the MKG stands out in its simple elegance and its harmonious proportions. The inscription in Doric dialect declares the caduceus the property of the Sicilian city of Syracuse.
